The Dandelion Said What?
A couple of months ago I walked past a dandelion growing in a sea of grass and it seemed to say “Grow and thrive where you are planted.”
Hmmm… I thought. That’s a loaded message. (Thinking about the numerous times over the past several years I had longed to live some place else – some place I might ‘fit in’ better – you know the grass is always greener on the other side kind of mentality!)
So, I pondered some of the qualities I knew off hand about a dandelion.
• It’s a plucky little flower which grows where ever it pleases; with-standing all kinds of weather and pesticides.
• Its roots are hardy.
• I still love blowing the dandelion puff and sending my wishes off into the Universe.
• Some people consider it a pesky weed.
• Some individuals believe it is an essential plant to keep in your yard to keep other pesky things out.
• Despite being considered, in today’s society, a weed it has wonderful healing qualities.
• And some people even think its leaves taste quite yummy in salad, tea or cooked with just a little butter and salt!
• I’ve always been fond of the Dandelion – a definite carry over from my childhood. To me Dandelions are sun gems; shining all around at my feet.
• Standing in a sea of Dandelions conjures up the same feeling of being surrounded by and infused with Spirit as I feel when I stand face to face with the sun. (There’s nothing more soothing to my soul than to stand face to face with the sun, be wrapped in its warm rays and feel its essence being absorbed into every cell of my being. Having this experience with the sun simultaneously creates a physical reaction within my body one of heightening my senses and my becoming keenly aware of Spirit enveloping me.)
Hmm…Yes, it was definitely a loaded message.
Having reviewed the list of things I knew made me curious about what Ted Andrews says about the dandelion in his book Nature- Speak. Ted’s insight into nature has nurtured my soul for several years now and what I learned in his book about the dandelion was no exception.
Here’s a little taste of what Ted has to say:
“Dandelion
Keynote: find beauty where you haven’t looked; look beyond the surface.
…Dandelion teaches us that there is worth and beauty beyond what is visible and
apparent. It teaches us to look beyond the surface of things. Dandelion is a weed
with great qualities – including color and vitality. Is there something of color and
vitality that we are missing around us?”
Yes, my little dandelion friend spoke volumes to me.
I relish the moments when nature encourages me to stop and delve within – to re-examine beliefs and thought processes that may no longer serving me to my highest and best interest. The gentle nudge from nature is sometimes all that I need to change my perspective and allow myself to find new ways of nurturing myself.
My wish for you is that you find new ways of nurturing yourself and find beauty within and without.
Much Love to you today and always,
Donice
